October 1 My Stephen King Reading List
On the latest episode of Galactic Suburbia I mentioned I’m about to start working through a Stephen King reading list, given to me by Kirstyn from the Writer and the Critic. Tansy thought others might want to follow along. So here it is:
- Carrie
- Salem’s Lot
- The Shining
- Different Seasons – but only The Body and Shawshank therein. Do NOT read Apt Pupil, Alisa!
- Thinner (published under Richard Bachman)
- IT
- Eyes of the Dragon
- Misery
- Bag of Bones
- Duma Key
- The Dark Tower

I’ve read all of these. I got bored with Stephen King about the time Insomnia came out. Everything after that I found a little more mellow than his earlier works.
You are aware the Dark Tower is 7 books long and last I heard he’s going to add more to it?
I think that’s why Dark Tower is last on the list!
Thanks for posting Alisa and thanks for creating the list Kirstyn. I have only recently come to King myself. Somewhere in my youth I seemed to have picked up some horror snobbery or perhaps it’s just King. I have slowly been brought back to reading him through watching adaptations of his books like the Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile. I read Salem’s lot late last year – the book was far better than either of the movies I watched.
I’d be interested to see what Carrie is like – I have seen the movie (found it very dated).
I’ve only read like half of The Stand and a short he had in Asimov’s a couple of years ago. Not sure how I’m going to go with Carrie but we’ll soon find out!
